Proton ยท Transponder & Immobilizer
Every Proton built since the early 2000s carries a small transponder chip in the key. Without it the engine will not start, even with a perfectly cut key. Here is what the chip does, why a hardware shop key will never work on its own, and how we program a new one in Kuching.
The immobilizer is an anti-theft system built into the car's engine computer. Inside the plastic head of your key sits a transponder โ a tiny glass or carbon chip with no battery of its own. It is powered by a coil of wire wrapped around the ignition barrel, or by the antenna ring in a push-start car.
Turn the key and the car asks the chip a question. The chip answers with a code. If the code matches what the engine computer expects, fuel and ignition are released and the car starts. If it does not match, the starter may crank but the engine will not fire.
This is why cutting a key alone is never enough on a modern Proton. A cut key will open the door and turn in the ignition, but the car stays immobilised until the chip is programmed to that specific vehicle.
The antenna ring around the ignition sends out a radio field. The transponder has no battery โ it draws its power from that field.
It transmits its encrypted ID back to the immobilizer module. The code changes on every attempt on newer systems, so it cannot simply be copied off the air.
The engine computer compares the answer against the keys stored in its memory. Match, and fuel injection is enabled. No match, and the engine is blocked.
Proton has used several generations of transponder over the years. The right one depends on the model and year, and sometimes on the variant. Call us with your model and we will confirm before you travel.
| Proton model | Key type | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Wira, Waja, Satria, Gen-2 | Early fixed-code transponder | Cut and program spare key |
| Saga BLM, Saga FLX, Persona | Transponder key with separate or integrated remote | Spare key, remote, all key lost |
| Exora, Preve, Suprima S | Flip key with built-in remote | Flip key duplication and programming |
| Iriz, Saga 2016+, Persona 2016+ | Rolling-code transponder | Spare key, remote replacement |
| X50, X70, X90 | Smart key, push-start keyless entry | Smart key programming, all key lost |
Not sure which one you have? Send us a photo of your key on WhatsApp and we will tell you.
Kereta tak boleh start? These are the usual symptoms.
The starter turns normally but the engine never catches. The classic immobilizer block.
The key symbol or red dot on the dashboard flashes instead of going out after ignition on.
Fuel is cut a moment after firing because the chip was not recognised in time.
Usually a damaged transponder in the spare, or a key that was cut but never programmed.
You still have a working key. We cut and program a second one, usually in under 15 minutes.
Every key gone. We read the immobilizer data, cut a fresh key and program it to the car on site.
Buttons not responding, casing cracked, or remote lost โ we replace and re-pair it to your car.
They can cut the blade, and it will open the door. But without programming the transponder to your car's immobilizer, the engine will not start. Cutting and programming are two separate jobs.
No. We come to you anywhere in Kuching with the equipment in the van, so the car does not have to move.
Yes. All key lost is a normal job for us. Bring your identity card and proof of ownership such as the grant or insurance, and we will produce a working key on site.
On a spare key job your current keys keep working. On an all key lost job the old keys are wiped from memory, which is what stops a lost key from ever starting your car again.
A spare key is usually under 15 minutes. All key lost takes longer depending on the model and the immobilizer generation.
Tell us the model and year and we will quote you before we come out. On-site across Kuching.
